BARNARD SCHOOL 6th GRADER MAKES PIZZA WITH CHEF TIM ON CHANNEL 8, bringing Chefs Move to Schools to a NEW level!

A Barnard Magnet School 6th grader was able to play TV chef today on Channel 8 – with a little help from New Haven Schools Executive Director of Food Services Timothy Cipriano.

Corey Bethea, who wants to be a chef, and Cipriano made pizzas in a segment today for Channel 8’s Connecticut Style show. Click here to see the video if not visible below.

“Corey loves to cook,” Cipriano said. “This kind of literally hands-on experience teaches kids cooking is easy, fun and makes fantastic food. Our food programs aim to teach kids to make smart, healthy and tasty food choices.

“Corey handled his on-air moment like a pro. Attention Iron Chefs: Watch out!”

Cipriano also discussed the importance of healthy school meals and ending childhood hunger. For more information on the No Kid Hungry Connecticut campaign please go to www.nokidhungry.org/connecticut.

Here’s Chef Tim’s recipe:

· Store bought one pound pizza dough
· 8 oz container ricotta cheese
· Local honey
· Locally grown greens/sprouts

Stretch out dough to desired shape and bake in 350F oven for 10 min. Remove from oven and cool briefly. Spread ricotta cheese and drizzle with honey. Return to oven for 7 min. Remove from oven and sprinkle with greens/sprouts. Cut into pieces and enjoy a slice.

Under Cipriano, the district introduced a healthy menu with less fat and sodium and more fresh fruits and vegetables, many from local farms. The food program complements the district’s School Change Initiative reforms that seek to close the achievement gap, halve the dropout rate and assure all students are academically and financially prepared to attend a two- or four-year college.
