NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - New Haven is rolling out its summer of free breakfast and lunch for local school kids.
School officials say summer is often a time when a lot of local kids don't have enough food to eat.
The free breakfasts and free lunches aren't just for summer school students. There are different areas throughout New Haven where children can go to get two healthy, free meals.
"I get breakfast, its good, we get cereal," says a summer school student.
The city provides over five thousand students with free breakfast and lunch which today was grilled cheese, grape juice and a nectarine.

For many of the students the free meals are the only meals they can be sure of getting which is why the city is telling parents any child can come and take a seat in any cafeterias at 39 city schools.

The program is paid for with federal funds. Parents are able to sign up and get free meals for any child age 18 an under. Any parent with questions about the free meal program can call 211 or visit www.ctsummerfood.org .
There is also an effort to get a so called lunch truck to venture into city's poorer neighborhoods giving free meals to kids.
"We can bring the food to them and set up a meal site right where they live," says Timothy Cipriano, Executive Director of Food Services.
Students say having a full tummy helps them pay attention.
"Yeah so I can get my brain training yeah," says Edsaida Hernandez.
They hope to get the mobil food truck in the neighborhoods soon to serve both lunch and dinner.
