New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - The Summer Food Truck hit the road for the first time Wednesday, serving up lunch and dinner for needy kids in New Haven.

Milk, fruit and more are all available, free of charge, to children under the age of 18.

"A lot of times in the different neighborhoods they're not getting the proper food they need to eat to sustain brain power," said Alfred Boyd, New Haven Public Schools.

The truck, provided by the United Way of Greater New Haven, has the potential to serve one thousand lunches and dinners per day.

It's staffed by New Haven School employees Alfred Boyd and Toni Daddio. They say the same kids who get a breakfast at school during the academic year often slip through the cracks, in terms of eating right, during the summer months.

"I think the need is a lot greater during the year, don't get me wrong during the year there's a need, but now that they're not provided with beakfast in the summer months, there's a greater need," Daddio said.

A need important enough to keep Alfred Boyd around the city this summer. He could be off on vacation, but he'd rather be here.

"It's always better to give than receive, so I'd rather give of my time and service to see somebody eat some food and be strong than go on vacation," he said.

The food truck will be available August 4th-30th at the following locations and times:

Supper: 4 pm - 4:45 pm
